There is a popular story about Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga. Which is like this, Lord Shiva lived on the Himalayan mountain with his wife Mata Durga Swarupini Parvati. There should be no obstacle in the reputation of Lord Shiva, so Parvati ji said that choose some other place where we can live alone and peaceful.
Shiva liked the city of Varanasi of King Divodas very much. In order to have a peaceful place for Lord Shiva, a Shiva gan named Nikumbha destroyed the city of Varanasi. But all this made the king sad. The king pleased Brahma ji by doing severe penance and prayed to him to remove his sorrow.
Divodas said that Brahmadev! Gods reside in Devlok, the earth is for human beings. Please remove my pidda, on the behest of Brahma ji, Shiva went to the Mandarachal mountain. They left but they could not leave their fascination with the city of Kashi. Then Lord Vishnu ordered the king to go to Tapovan. After that Varanasi became the permanent residence of Mahadev Ji and Shiva established the city of Varanasi on his trident.
There is also a belief that Lord Shiva came in the dream of his devotee and said that you will take a bath in the Ganges, after that you will see two Shivlings. You have to install those two Shivlings together. Then the divine Shivling will be established.
Since then Lord Shiva is sitting here with Mother Parvati. According to mythological beliefs, Shri Kashi Vishwanath is in two parts. Mother Parvati is seated in the form of Shakti on the right side, while Lord Shiva is seated on the left. Kashi has been reverberating from time immemorial with the shouts of Baba Vishwanath.
Here Shiva devotees come with the wish of salvation. It is also believed that the city of Kashi is situated on the trident of Shiva and the place where Jyotirlinga is established, that place never disappears. According to Skanda Purana, the rhythm which is not attained even in catastrophe, a flag-shaped light beam is visible from the sky circle, that Kashi is imperishable.
