The Markandeya Purana, one of the eighteen major Puranas, contains verses of Goddess Kavach (Durga Kavach) and is part of the wonderful Durga Saptashati. Goddess Kavach was narrated by Lord Brahma to sage Markandeya and it consists of 47 verses, followed by 9 verses with Phalshruti. Phalshruti means, what is the result obtained by listening or reading it, it has been told. In this, Lord Brahma praises Goddess Parvati in nine different divine forms.Lord Brahma requests each one to read Devi Kavach and seek the blessings of Mother Goddess. Whoever recites this kavacham regularly receives blessings from Maa Durga.
A powerful collection of mantras to eliminate negativity around you is in the form of Devi Kavach. It acts as a shield to protect from any evil spirits. Mantras have the ability to transform negative, unfavorable vibrations into more positive and attractive vibrations. It is said that one who recites Goddess Kavacham regularly with sincere devotion and correct pronunciation, is protected from all evils. It is considered very auspicious to recite Goddess Kavacham during Navratras. The goddess has different names, which are based on different parts of the body. It is almost the same as Yoga Nidra, but with names. Every name has some quality and some energy inherent in it and there is a close relationship between name and form (shape). Kavach means to protect, to make a kind of cover around oneself. This is very good/perfect.
Under Devi Kavach we chant various names of the Mother Goddess, which surrounds us, forming a Kavach around our body. Its ritual is especially performed on all the Nine days of Navratri. This is very important for us. Sit down and listen to it. Although there is a protective shield all around us, yet listening to it has a more positive effect - it makes the soul of a person upwards.
