।। ‘गंगा पूजा यमुना को, यमी पूजे यमराज को। सुभद्रा पूजे कृष्ण को गंगा यमुना नीर बहे मेरे भाई आप बढ़ें फूले फलें।’ ।।
According to the belief of Hinduism, the Sun God had two children, one son Yamraj and the other daughter Yamuna. There was a lot of love between Yamraj and Yamuna. Yamraj loved his sister very much, but could not go to meet his sister. One day Yama went to Yamuna ji's house to meet her sister to overcome her displeasure. Yamuna was very happy to see her brother. Cooked food for the brother and respected him. Yama was so pleased to see his sister's love that he gave many gifts and blessings to Yamuna.
Before leaving, Yama said to his sister Yamuna ji, I was very happy to meet my sister, so I wish to grant you a wish, ask for any boon. Yamuna listened to his request and said that if you want to grant me a boon, then give this boon that every year on this day you come to my place and accept my hospitality. Yamraj gave him a boon to be like this. It is said that after this the festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated every year. Therefore Yamraj and Yamuna are also worshiped on the day of Bhai Dooj.
Apart from this, a story of Bhai Dooj is also prevalent about Lord Krishna and his sister Subhadra. It is said that after killing Narakasura, when Lord Krishna had come to meet his sister Subhadra. His sister had welcomed him with flowers and aarti and had done tika on his forehead. Since then this festival started being celebrated and on this day sisters pray for the long life of their brother.
