सुप्ते त्वयि जगन्नाथ जमत्सुप्तं भवेदिदम्। विबुद्दे त्वयि बुद्धं च जगत्सर्व चराचरम्।
According to the Vamana Purana, Bali, the king of the Asuras, had captured the three worlds by his strength and might. Seeing the suzerainty of King Bali, Indradev and other gods panicked and went to the shelter of Lord Vishnu and prayed to him to help. Hearing the call of the gods, Lord Vishnu took the form of Vamana and went to ask for alms from King Bali.
Lord Vamana asked King Bali for three steps of land. In the first and second steps, the Lord measured the earth and the sky. Now there was nothing left to keep the third step, so King Bali asked Lord Vishnu to put the third step on his head. Lord Vamana did the same. In this way, the worries of the gods ended and Lord Vishnu was very pleased with the charity of King Bali. When he asked King Bali to ask for a boon, Bali asked him for a boon to settle in Hades. God had to go to Hades to fulfill the wish of the sacrifice.
After Lord Vishnu goes to Patal Lok, all the gods and Goddess Lakshmi became worried. In order to bring back her husband Lord Vishnu, Mata Lakshmi reached King Bali as a poor woman and tied a rakhi to him as her brother. In return, he took the promise to take Lord Vishnu back from Hades. While taking leave from Hades, Lord Vishnu granted a boon to King Bali that he would reside in Hades from the Ekadashi of Ashadh Shukla Paksha to the Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. This period of his stay in Hades is considered Yoga Nidra.
