According to Narada Purana, there was a demon named Hiranyakashipu in ancient times. The demon king considered himself greater than God. He wanted people to worship only him. But his own son Prahlad was the ultimate Vishnu devotee. Bhakti was inherited by her from her mother.
Due to this, he made many efforts to remove his son from the devotion of God, but the devotee Prahlad could not give up the devotion of the Lord.
When Prahlad did not agree even after much persuasion, Hiranyakashipu thought of killing his own son. Even after several attempts, he failed to kill Prahlad. Despite repeated attempts to kill him, he kept avoiding the grace of the Lord.
After this she took help from her sister Holika who had a boon that she would not get burnt in the fire. Holika sat on the pyre with Bhagat Prahlad in her lap. Seeing all this, Prahlad did not get upset at all. He kept on chanting the name of Lord Vishnu with full devotion. But this boon of Holika ended when she tried to kill Prahlad, the devotee of Lord. Thus Holika died in an attempt to kill Prahlad. Holika got burnt in the fire but by the grace of Lord Narayana nothing happened to Prahlad.
