The whole context of the Satyanarayan Bhagwan Story is that in ancient times, Shaunkadi Rishi reached the ashram of Maharishi Soot located at Naimisharanya. The sages ask Maharishi Sut what is the simple remedy for liberation from worldly suffering, worldly happiness, prosperity, and achievement of the supernatural goal. Maharishi Soot tells the sages that Narad ji had asked a similar question to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu told Narad ji that there is only one highway for liberation from worldly afflictions, worldly happiness, prosperity, and attainment of supernatural goals, and that is Satyanarayan Vrat. Satyanarayana means truthfulness, satyagraha, and integrity. The attainment of happiness and prosperity in the world is possible only through truthful conduct. Truth is God. Satyacharan means worship of God, worship of God.
The story begins with Sut ji narrating the story. Narad ji goes to Lord Vishnu and praises him. After hearing the praise, Lord Shri Vishnu ji said to Narad ji - Great! For what purpose have you come here, what is on your mind? Say, I'll tell you everything. Narad ji said - Lord! In the world of death, all the people born in different species by their sinful deeds are suffering from many kinds of troubles.
Oh Nath! By which small measure their sufferings can be redressed, if you have mercy on me, then I want to hear all that. (Tell him)
Shri Bhagwan said - O Vatsa! You have asked a very good point about the desire to be gracious to the world. Let me tell you the fast by which the creature becomes free from attachment, listen. O son! There is a great virtuous fast of Lord Satyanarayan, rare in heaven and in the world of death. Because of your affection, I am telling him at this time. By observing Lord Satyanarayan Vrat in a good way, one can attain happiness soon and attain salvation in the hereafter.
Narad Muni said, Lord, what is the fruit of observing this fast? What is its legislation? Who observed this fast and when should it be done? Explain all this in detail.
Shri Bhagwan said - This Satyanarayan fast is the one who quenches sorrows and sorrows, increases wealth and food, gives good fortune and children and gives victory everywhere. Any day, in sync with devotion and reverence, one should worship Lord Satyanarayan in the evening, being ready in religion along with brahmins and brothers and sisters. In the form of naivedya, good quality food items should be offered devotionally in small quantities. Banana fruits, ghee, milk, wheat powder or in the absence of wheat powder, sathi rice powder, sugar, or jaggery – all these edible ingredients should be collected and offered in a small quantities.
Hearing the story of Lord Satyanarayan along with brothers and sisters, Brahmins should be given dakshina. Thereafter, Brahmins should be fed food along with brothers and sisters. Dance-song etc. should be organized by taking prasad with devotion. After that, remembering Lord Satyanarayana one should go to his home. By doing this the desires of human beings are definitely fulfilled. Especially in Kaliyuga, this is the shortest remedy in Prithviloka.

Shri Sutji said - O dvijas! Now I will again describe in detail the one who performed this Satyanarayan fast in the past. There lived a very poor Brahmin in the delightful city of Kashi. Distraught with hunger and thirst, he wandered the earth every day. Seeing that sad Brahmin, God, taking the form of an old Brahmin, respectfully asked that Dwij - O Vipra! Why do you keep traveling on the earth every day being very sad? O best of two! Tell me all this, I want to hear.
The brahmin said - Lord! I am a very poor brahmin and roam the earth only for alms. If you know any way to remove this poverty of mine, then please tell me.
The old brahmin said - O brahmin! Satyanarayan Lord Vishnu is the giver of the desired result. O Vipra! You should do his best fast, by doing which a person becomes free from all sorrows.
Lord Vishnu, who was in the form of an old Brahmin, disappeared thereby diligently telling the law of the fast to the Brahmin. The brahmin could not sleep in the night thinking, 'As told by the old brahmin, I will do that fast properly.
The next day, waking up early in the morning, the brahmin went for alms with a resolution like 'I will fast for Satyanarayan'. On that day the Brahmin received a lot of money in alms. With the same money, he fasted Lord Satyanarayan along with his brothers and sisters. Due to the effect of this fast, that noble Brahmin became free from all sorrows and became full of all wealth. From that day onwards he observed this fast every month. Thus by observing this fast of Lord Satyanarayana, the superior Brahmin was freed from all sins and attained rare salvation.
O Vipra! Whenever a person observes the fast of Shri Satyanarayan on earth, at that time all his miseries will be destroyed. O brahmins! In this way, whatever Lord Narayan said to Mahatma Naradji, I have told you all, what should I say next?
Oh my! Who on this earth performed this fast after hearing from that brahmin? We want to hear all that, we are having faith in that fast.
Shri Sut ji said - Munis! Listen to the one who observed this fast on the earth. Once that Dwijashrestha, according to his wealth, got ready to fast with his brothers and family members. In the meantime a woodcutter came there and went to the Brahmin's house, keeping the wood outside. Distraught with thirst, seeing that Brahmin fasting, he bowed down and said to him - Lord! What are you doing, what is the result of doing it, tell me in detail.
Vipra said - This is the fast of Satyanarayan, the one who grants all desires. Due to his influence, I have received all this great wealth, etc. After drinking water and taking prasad, he went to the city. For Satyanarayan Dev, I started thinking like this with my heart 'I will do the best fast of Lord Satyanarayan with the money that I will get from selling wood today.' In this way, meditating with his mind, keeping the wood on his head, he went to the beautiful city where rich people lived. That day he got twice the price of the wood.
After this, with a happy heart, he came to his house with ripe banana fruit, sugar, ghee, milk, and wheat powder in a quarter quantity. After that, he called his brothers and performed a fast to Lord Shri Satyanarayan by law. Due to the effect of that fast, he became full of wealth and son and after enjoying many pleasures in this world, he finally went to Satyapur i.e. Baikunthalok.

Shri Sutji said - Best sages! Now I will tell the next story again, you guys listen. In ancient times there was a king named Ulkamukh. He was witty, truthful and very intelligent. The learned king used to visit the temple every day and satisfy the Brahmins by giving them money. His wife, Sheela, having a lotus-like face, was endowed with virtues like modesty and beauty and was devoted to her. One day the king along with his wife was fasting on the banks of the Bhadrashila river on the banks of the river, Sri Satyanarayana. At the same time, a bania named Sadhu, who was endowed with many types of Pushkal money for business, came there. After setting up the boat on the bank of river Bhadrashila, he went near the king and, seeing the king initiated into that fast, started asking humbly.
The monk said - Rajan! What are you doing with a devotional mind? Please tell me all that I want to hear at this time.
The king said - O sadho! With the desire to have a son, etc., along with my brothers and sisters, I am fasting and worshiping Lord Vishnu, the incomparable effulgent.
After listening to the king, the monk respectfully said - Rajan! You tell me everything in detail in this matter, and according to your statement, I will fast and worship. I don't have children either. 'By this surely a child will be obtained.' Thinking so, he retired from business and happily came to his home. He explained in detail this Satyavrata, which gave progeny from his wife and - 'When I get a child, then I will do this fast' - thus the sage said to his brother-in-law Leelavati.
One day, her sati-sadhvi named Leelavati, along with her husband, engaged in seasonal religious practices with joy and by the grace of Lord Sri Satyanarayana, she became pregnant. Kanyaratna was born from her in the tenth month and she started growing day by day like the moon of Shukla Paksha. That girl was named 'Kalavati'. After this, one day Lilavati said in a sweet voice to her master - Why are you not observing the fast of Shri Satyanarayan, as determined earlier?
The monk said - dear! I will fast at the time of his marriage. Thus after convincing his wife well, he went to the city to do business. Here the girl Kalavati started growing up in her father's house. After that, the virtuous sage, playing with friends in the city, seeing his daughter worthy of marriage, consulted amongst themselves and searched for the best groom for the girl's marriage - saying this to the messenger and sending him soon. On receiving his permission, the messenger went to a city named Kanchan and brought a merchant's son from there. Seeing that Vanik's son was handsome and endowed with qualities, being satisfied with the people of his caste and brothers and sisters, he donated the girl by law in the hands of Vanikputra.
At that time that sage-baniya, unfortunately, forgot that best vow of God. According to the earlier resolution, the Lord became angry with him for not observing the fast at the time of marriage. After some time, skilled in his business, he went to the beautiful city of Ratnasarpur, located near the sea, to do business with his son-in-law, and started doing business there with his rich son-in-law. After that both of them went to the delightful city of King Chandraketu. At the same time, Lord Sri Satyanarayana, seeing him as corrupt-minded, gave a curse - 'It will be painful, difficult and great misery'.
One day a thief stole the money of King Chandraketu and came to the place where both the merchants were located. Seeing the messengers running after him, he quickly hid, leaving the money there in fear. After this, the messengers of the king came to the place where he was a sage vanik. Seeing the king's wealth there, the messengers brought the two sons of Vanik tied up and running with joy and said to the king - 'Lord! We have caught two thieves, seeing them, you give orders. By the order of the king, both were soon tied firmly and without any thought, they were put in the great prison. Due to the illusion of Lord Satyadev, no one listened to both of them and King Chandraketu took away the wealth of both of them.
Due to the curse of the Lord, his wife in the merchant's house also became very sad and the thief stole all the wealth that was in their house. Lilavati, suffering from physical and mental pains, suffering from hunger and thirst, started wandering from door to door worrying about food. Kalavati girl also started roaming here and there every day for food. One day, suffering from hunger, Kalavati went to a Brahmin's house. Going there, he saw the fast worship of Shri Satyanarayan. Sitting there, he listened to the story and asked for a boon. After that, after taking the prasad, she went home after a few nights.
Mother lovingly asked Kalavati girl - daughter! Where did you stay at night? What's on your mind? Kalavati girl immediately said to her mother - Mother! I have seen a wish-giving fast in the house of a brahmin. On hearing that girl's words, she got ready to fast for the merchant's wife, and with a happy heart, that sadhvi along with her brothers and sisters fasted for Lord Sri Satyanarayana and thus prayed - 'Lord! You forgive the crime of our husband and Jamata. Both of them should come to their homes soon.
' Lord Satyanarayana was again satisfied with this fast and he showed the dream to Nripashreshtha Chandraketu and said in the dream - 'Nrupashreshtha! Leave both the merchants in the morning and also give all the money which you have taken from them at this time, otherwise I will destroy you along with the kingdom, wealth and son.'
Saying this to the king in a dream, Lord Satyanarayana disappeared. After this, in the morning the king sat in the meeting with his members and told his dream to the people and said - 'Free the two captive Vanikputras soon.' Hearing such a thing from the king, he brought both the moneylenders free from bondage and brought them in front of the king and said humbly - 'Maharaj! Both the sons of Vanik have been brought free from the shackles of fetters. After this, both the kings became frightened by paying obeisance to Nripashreshtha Chandraketu, remembering their antecedents and could not speak anything.
Seeing the Vanik sons, the king said respectfully - 'You people have got this great misery due to destiny, at this time there is no fear anymore.' Did. He gave double the money that he had taken earlier, after that the king again said to them - 'Sadho! Now you go to your home.' By saluting the king, 'By your grace we are leaving.' Saying this, both the Mahavaishyas left for their home.

Sreesut ji said - After the invocation and giving money to the Brahmins, the sage Baniya left for his city. After the sadhu went some distance, Lord Satyanarayana got curious about the test of his truthfulness - 'Sadho! What's in your boat?' Then both the moneylenders laughing defiantly in the matter of money said - 'Dandi sannyasin! why are you asking? Want to take some currency? Our boat is full of creepers and leaves etc.' Hearing such a cruel voice, he said - 'May your words come true' - saying this, the Lord, taking the form of a Dandi sannyasin, went some distance away and sat near the sea.
After performing daily rituals after the departure of Dandi, that is, seeing the boat raised in the water, the monk was very surprised and fainted after seeing the creeper and leaves etc. in the boat and fell on the earth. On being alert, Vanikputra got worried. Then his son-in-law said like this - 'Why do you grieve? The punishment has given a curse, in this situation, if he wants, he can do everything, there is no doubt about it. Therefore, let us take refuge in him, where the desire of the mind will be fulfilled. After listening to the son-in-law, the sage-baniya went to him and upon seeing the punishment, he bowed down to him and respectfully said - whatever I have said in front of you, I have committed a crime in the form of misrepresentation, you forgive that crime of mine - by saying this again and again. He was distraught with great grief by bowing down.
Seeing her weeping, Dandi said - 'O fool! Don't cry, listen to me. Because of being indifferent to my worship and because of my orders, you have repeatedly suffered.' hearing such the voice of God, he started praising him.
The monk said - 'O Lord! It is astonishing that even the gods like Brahma cannot know your qualities and forms as they are due to being enchanted by your illusion, then how can I, a fool, being fascinated by your illusion, know? You be happy I will worship you according to my wealth. I have come under your shelter. All the money that I had in the boat, protect it and me.' Lord Janardan was satisfied after hearing the devotional voice of that baniya.
Lord Hari disappeared there after giving him the desired boon. After that the sage boarded his boat and seeing him full of wealth and food, he duly worshiped the Lord along with his relatives by saying 'by the grace of Lord Satyadev' - saying this. By the grace of Lord Shri Satyanarayana, he became full of joy and after handling the boat with effort, he left for his country. Sadhu Baniya said to his son-in-law - 'Look at that, my Ratnapuri city is visible'. After this he sent the messenger of his wealth to his city to inform them about his arrival.
After that the messenger went to the city and bowed down to see the wife of the monk and said the desired thing for him - 'Seth ji has come near the city after being endowed with a lot of wealth along with his son-in-law and relatives.' Hearing this from the messenger's mouth, she was very happy and that Sadhvi worshiped Shri Satyanarayana and said to her daughter - 'I am going to see the monk, you come soon.' After listening to such a word of the mother, after ending the fast and abandoning the prasad, Kalavati also went to see her husband. Lord Satyanarayana was enraged by this and he robbed her husband and the boat along with the money and drowned it in the water.
After this, Kalavati girl, not seeing her husband, fell to the earth crying with great grief. Seeing the sight of the boat and seeing the girl very sad, the sage Baniya thought with a frightened heart - what is this surprise? Everyone who operated the boat also got worried. After that, that Lilavati also became terrified on seeing the girl and, lamenting with great sadness, spoke to her husband like this - 'How did he become unimpressed with the boat just now, don't know which deity was hijacked by neglect or who can know the greatness of Sri Satyanarayana!' Saying this she started mourning with her relatives and Kalavati started crying taking the girl in her lap.
Kalavati girl too was saddened by the loss of her husband and decided in her mind to follow her husband's footpad. Seeing this kind of behavior of the girl, the virtuous monk Baniya along with Bharya became very sad and started thinking - either Lord Satyanarayan has kidnapped this or we are all fascinated by the illusion of Lord Satyadev. According to my money power, I will worship Lord Shree Satyanarayan. After calling everyone like this, he expressed his heart's desire and repeatedly bowed down to Lord Satyadev. This pleased Lord Satyadev, the guardian of the oppressed. Lord Bhaktavatsal graciously spoke to the Akashvani - 'Your daughter has left the prasad and has gone to see her husband, definitely because of this her husband has become invisible. If he comes again after going home after taking prasad, then your daughter will get the husband, there is no doubt about it.
Kanya Kalavati also went home soon after hearing such a voice from the sky and took the prasad. Came again and saw relatives and her husband. Then Kalavati girl said to her father - 'Now let's go home, why are you delaying?' Vanikputra was satisfied after hearing that girl's statement and after worshiping Lord Satyanarayana according to the law, went to his house with money and brothers and sisters. After that, while worshiping Lord Satyanarayan on the festivals of Purnima and Sankranti, after enjoying happiness in this world, he finally went to Satyapur Baikunthalok.

Sreesut ji said - Best sages! Now after this, I will tell another story, you guys listen. There was a king named Tungadhwaj who was ready to obey his subjects. He got sorrowful by giving up the offerings of Satyadev. Once he came under the banyan tree after killing many animals in the forest. There he saw that the Gopas, satisfied with their brothers and sisters, were worshiping Lord Satyadev with devotion. Even after seeing this, the king neither went there arrogantly nor did he bow down to Lord Satyanarayan. After worship, all the Gopagans returned from the place keeping God's prasad near the king and they all accepted the Lord's prasad as per their wish. Here the king was deeply saddened by the abandonment of Prasad.
All his wealth and grains and all hundred sons were destroyed. The king decided in his mind that Lord Satyanarayan must have destroyed us. That's why I should go to the place where Shri Satyanarayana was worshipped. Having decided this in his mind, he went near the king's gopagans and worshiped Lord Satyadev methodically with the gopagans having devotion-reverence. By the grace of Lord Satyadev, he again became full of wealth and sons and after enjoying all the pleasures in this world, he finally attained Satyapur Vaikunthalok.
Shri Sut ji says - The person who observes this very rare Shri Satyanarayan's fast and listens with devotion to the story of God who is virtuous and fruitful, gets wealth and grain, etc. by the grace of Lord Satyanarayan. The poor become rich, the one who is in bondage becomes free from the bondage, and the frightened person becomes free from fear - this is a fact, there is no doubt about it. After getting enjoyment of all the desired fruits in this world, he finally goes to Satyapur Vaikunthalok. O brahmins! Thus I told you to observe the fast of Lord Satyanarayan, by which one becomes free from all sorrows.
In Kaliyuga, worship of Lord Satyadev is going to give special results. Some people call Lord Vishnu as Kaal, some people as Satya, some Ish and some Satyadev, and others the name Satyanarayan. By taking many forms, Lord Satyanarayana proves everyone's desire. In Kaliyuga, the eternal Lord Vishnu will be the one to fulfill everyone's wishes by taking the form of Satyavrat. O best sages! The person who reads and listens to this Vrat-Katha of Lord Satyanarayana regularly, all his sins are destroyed by the grace of Lord Satyanarayana. O sages! In the past, I tell the story of the next birth of those who had fasted for Lord Satyanarayan, you guys listen.
Due to the effect of fasting Satyanarayana, a brahmin named Shatanand, a great prajnasampanna, he became a brahmin named Sudama in his second birth and attained salvation by meditating on Lord Krishna in that birth. The woodcutter Bhil became the king of the caves and in the next life, he attained salvation by serving Lord Shri Ram. King Ulkamukh became King Dasaratha in the second birth, who after worshiping Sri Ranganatha finally attained Vaikuntha.
Similarly, due to the influence of Satyavrata of the previous birth, a religious and Satyavrati monk, a king named Mordhwaj was born in the second birth. He attained salvation by cutting through a saw and offering half the body of his son to Lord Vishnu. Maharaja Tungadhwaj became Swayambhuva Manu after birth and after performing all the works related to God, he attained Vaikunthalok. All the gopas who lived in the Vrajamandal after birth became gopas and after killing all the demons, they also attained the eternal abode of God, Goloka.
