It was a long time ago that a Brahmin used to reside in a city, she was a devotee of Shri Hari Lord Vishnu. Brahmins used to perform every fast of Lord Vishnu with full devotion and rules. Once a Brahmin kept a fast for one month for Shraddha Sahitya. By doing which his body became weak but his mind became completely pure. Seeing such a strict fast of his devotee, Lord Vishnu thought that by purifying his body he would attain heaven, but his mind would not be satisfied. But the Brahmin made a mistake in her fast that she had never given any donation to anyone during the fast. Because of this he will not get satisfaction in Vishnulok. Then the Lord himself went to his house to collect alms from him.
When Lord Vishnu went to that Brahmin's house to take alms, she gave a lump of soil to Lord Vishnu in charity. Lord Shri Hari brought alms from there. After enjoying all the pleasures in this birth, she reached Vishnulok after death. He got a cottage to stay there. In which there was nothing except a mango tree, he asked Lord Hari Vishnu ji that what was the benefit of doing so many fasts throughout my life? He found an empty cottage and a mango tree here. Then Shri Hari said that you have never donated food or money in human life. This is the result of that. Hearing this, he started repenting, he asked the Lord the solution.
Then Lord Vishnu started telling that when the Dev girls would come to meet you. So you ask him the rules and regulations for observing Shattila Ekadashi fast. Until they tell about it, don't let them enter the cottage, don't open the door. Did she do as told by Lord Vishnu or that Brahmin did not open the door of the hut. After getting defeated, Devkanyas told the story or method of Shatabdi Vrat to Brahmin, after knowing the method from Devkanyas, she also observed Shattila Ekadashi Vrat. Due to the effect of that fast, his cottage was filled with all the necessary things etc. Brahmins also became more beautiful than before.
